Description
When you hear grinding noises from the rear end or find gear oil dripping from the differential area, chances are your housing has developed cracks or worn bearing surfaces. The differential housing is what holds all the gears, shims, and bearings that split power between your rear wheels – when it fails, you’re looking at major drivetrain problems that’ll leave you stuck in the field.
What You’re Getting
- Heavy-duty cast housing designed to handle the stress of agricultural work
- Precision-machined bearing surfaces for proper gear alignment and smooth operation
- Proper mounting points for all related components including the differential shim
- OEM-quality construction that meets John Deere’s original specifications
Built for Real Farm Work
These John Deere 40 and 50 series tractors are proven workhorses that often have decades of hard service handling everything from loader work to heavy field cultivation. Whether you’re running a 2040, 2450, 2650, or 1840, the differential housing takes a beating transferring power from the transmission to both rear wheels while allowing them to turn at different speeds during turns.
Made to Last
Farm equipment differentials handle tremendous torque loads, especially when you’re pulling heavy implements or working in tough field conditions. This housing is manufactured from high-strength cast iron with the proper wall thickness to resist cracking under stress. The bearing bores are machined to precise tolerances to prevent premature wear and maintain proper gear mesh.
Installation Notes
This is a major repair that requires splitting the tractor and complete differential disassembly. Cleanliness is absolutely critical – any contamination will destroy components quickly. Disassemble carefully, noting the orientation of all components. You’ll also need differential housing shim QTP-57639 to set proper gear backlash during reassembly.
